National Medicare Education Week: September 15-22Posted by Medicare Made Clear
Medicare provides coverage to 49 million Americans. It is our nation’s largest health insurance program. And it’s about to get much larger.
Baby boomers will turn 65 at a rate of 10,000 every day for the next decade. This is the age when many people join Medicare. But guess what researchers learned? Most adults age 60 and over find Medicare confusing. Or they don’t understand it at all. (Source: 2011 survey, UnitedHealthcare and the National Council on Aging)
It’s Critical to Understand Medicare
People need clear, easy-to-understand information about Medicare. UnitedHealthcare created National Medicare Education Week to help you understand your options.
National Medicare Education Week is September 15-22, 2012. The Medicare Open Enrollment Period (OEP) starts one month later. OEP is when Medicare beneficiaries can make changes to their coverage, if they choose. It runs from Oct.15 to Dec. 7. Any changes to coverage would begin on Jan. 1, 2013.
Coming to a City Near You
National Medicare Education Week is a widespread effort. More than 50 cities across the country will have local educational events. You’ll be able to learn about:
The basics of Medicare Parts A, B, C and D
How to find coverage that best fits personal health needs and budgets
How family, friends and caregivers can help loved ones make Medicare decisions
The events will also include a hands-on workshop about online Medicare resources. In addition, you can learn how to use popular social media tools. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube can help you stay connected with friends and family.
You can get information about events at NMEW.com and on the Medicare Made Clear Facebook page. There is no cost to attend, but you need to sign up. You can participate even if there’s no event near you. Just go to Medicare Made Clear Facebook page in October. You’ll be able to view videos and photos of events from around the country.
