Three Steps to Enrolling in a Medicare Advantage Plan

If you want to add a Medicare Advantage plan, or switch from one plan to another, its time to do your research. You can make changes between October 15 and December 7 for the 2012 plan year.The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is the time of year to make changes to your Medicare plans. If you’re interested in getting additional coverage through a Medicare Advantage plan (or wish to switch from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another), enroll between October 15 through December 7. The change will take effect January 1, 2012. Here’s how.

Step 1: Get Ready – Enrollment begins October 15, 2011

The Annual Enrollment Period begins October 15 and ends December 7. Review your current coverage, noting any unexpected medical expenses, changes in your budget, or changes to your current plan for the coming year. (If your current plan has changes next year, you’ll receive a notice in the mail called an “ANOC” – Annual Notice of Changes.)

Step 2: Research Plans

To get ready, you’ll need to do some research. To find Medicare Advantage plans near you, go to the Medicare.gov website and use the plan finder tool. Input some basic information like location and health data. Medicare.gov will provide a number of Medicare plans in your area. You can research these results to compare benefits, drug coverage and prices.

Step 3: Enroll before December 7

When you’re ready to or enroll, contact the insurance company that administers the plan you’re interested in. Many plans allow phone or online enrollment, or you may fill out and mail in the plan’s enrollment application form. If you are switching from one Medicare Advantage plan to another, you will be automatically disenrolled from your previous Medicare Advantage plan once your new plan starts. Note that Medicare Advantage plan members remain enrolled in Original Medicare.
